Volatility
How much and how fast prices swing. High volatility means bigger ups and bigger downs — the price of higher long-term returns.

Why it matters
Volatility is not risk, though it feels like it. Risk is permanently losing money; volatility is the wobble along the way. Stocks are volatile and have still been the best long-term asset — the wobble is what you get paid for enduring. The danger is not volatility itself but your reaction to it: panic-selling turns temporary swings into permanent losses.
