Fiduciary
An advisor legally required to act in your best interest — not just sell you something "suitable." If your advisor is not a fiduciary, their advice serves two masters.

Why it matters
The fiduciary standard is the single most important question to ask anyone giving financial advice. Brokers and insurance agents typically follow the weaker "suitability" standard, meaning they can recommend the product that pays them the most as long as it is not absurd for you. A fiduciary must put your interests first, in writing. Always ask; never assume.
