Why it matters
The taxable brokerage account is where investing happens after the tax-advantaged accounts are full: no limits, withdraw anytime, invest in anything. The price of that freedom is taxes — dividends, interest, and realized gains are all taxable as they occur. Fund the 401(k) and IRA first; the brokerage account is for everything beyond that.
